Polaris Industries Inc. (PII), the largest maker and seller of utility-type vehicles in North America, says it will spend an undisclosed amount of money to enter the on-road vehicle-making business in September 2009 with a new range of 2010 model, electrically driven Breeze-badged units.
Polaris said the vehicles would be targeted for sale as "Neighborhood Vehicles."
The vehicle price and location of the manufacturer was not disclosed. Polaris does make utility-type vehicles at a site in Roseau, Minn.
The company said the Breeze-model electric vehicles are targeted for sale to golfers and to consumers in master planned communities.
Polaris is the largest producer of utility-type vehicles in North America with a 22% share of the 317,750-unit business during 2008. It likely will build 60,000 units in 2009, a 14.3% reduction as industry-wide business conditions contract in an economic downturn.
"The vehicle is the first of what we expect will be a series of successful ventures into the on-road vehicle category over the coming years," the company says.
