The condition of the U.S. corn crop is changed only slightly compared to a week ago, but it still lags the 5-year average, according to USDA’s latest Crop Progress report.
With 100% of the corn planted in the 18 states that accounted for 92% of the 2016 corn acreage, USDA reported that 94% of corn acres have emerged as of June 11. This compares with 86% a week earlier, 95% last year on this date, and the 5-year average of 94%.
USDA reports that the corn harvest is underway with 74% of the crop still in “good” (54%) or “excellent” (20%) condition. The ag agency is reporting that 5% of corn acres have been harvested as of Sept. 11. This compares with 4% on this date a year ago and the 5-year average of 7%.
USDA's latest Crop Progress reports indicate that the overall picture for the corn and soybean crops continues to improve. As a result, the accuracy of the ag agency’s record-setting yield estimates could be right on the mark.
National crop condition ratings for both corn and soybean crops were steady in the past week and remain above a year ago, but ratings for individual states, and regions within those states, vary widely.
The condition of the U.S. corn and soybean crops as of Aug. 7 varied very little from the that seen in the past several weeks, which means both crops could be on pace for record-setting harvests.
According to USDA’s Crop Progress report for July 24, 79% of corn is silking. This compares with 71% silking one year ago on this date and 5-year average of 70%.
The progress and condition of the U.S. corn and soybean crops all point to a bumper harvest, but increasing temperatures throughout the major growing regions and drought conditions bear watching.
