Planting of the 2010 corn crop, at 68%, is off to a start that is well ahead of last year’s crop (32%) and the average pace over the last 5 years (40%), according to USDA.
Corn acreage fell modestly, while soybean acreage increased and quarterly stocks of corn and soybeans were both sharply higher than expected according to USDA’s latest crop reports.
USDA says dramatically lower commodity prices and plunging exports mean that 2009 net farm income is expected to be down 38 percent from 2008 estimates and 15% from the 10-year average.
