The latest USDA Crop Progress report showed 75% of corn mature as of the week ended Sept. 27, 2020. This surpassed both the 39% reported mature in the same week last year and the 5 year average of 65%. North Carolina reported nearly all its corn mature at 96%.
The report also recorded 15% of corn harvested in the same week, above the 10% recorded one year ago but below the 16% 5 year average. North Carolina also reported the most corn harvested at 74%.
Corn crop condition was unchanged from last week, including 47% reported as "good" condition and 14% in "excellent" condition.
Nearly three-fourths (74%) of soybeans were reported dropping leaves in the same week, more than the 49% from the same week in 2019 and the 5 year average of 69%. Nebraska and Louisiana tied for the most soybeans dropping leaves at the end of the week at 92% each.
Some 20% of soybean crops have been harvested, more than triple the 6% from this time last year and above the 15% 5 year average. Louisiana reported the farthest along soybean harvest at 72% of its soybean crops harvested. Soybean crop condition was mostly unchanged from last week, aside from soybean crops in "excellent" condition rising from 12% last week to 13% this week and crops in "fair" condition dropping to 26% from 27% last week.
