According to the latest USDA Crop Progress report, 23% of corn was reported denting in the week ended August 16. This exceeded the 13% reported denting this time last year but was just below the 5 year average of 24%. Texas remains in the lead with 75% of its corn dented, followed by North Carolina at 74%. Around three fourths (76%) of corn was reported in the dough stage, exceeding both the 5 year average of 69% and the 50% reported doughing this time last year. North Carolina was in the lead with 92% of its corn in the dough stage.
Around one half (52%) of corn was reported in "good" condition, down 1 percentage point from the previous week and above the 46% reported in "good" condition this time last year. Some 17% of corn crops were reported in "excellent" condition, down 1 percentage point from last week but above the 10% reported "excellent" this time last year.
Nearly all soybeans were reported blooming at 96%, above the 88% reported blooming this time last year and the 94% 5 year average. Nebraska, Michigan and Louisiana have all reported 100% of their soybean crops blooming. The report showed 84% of soybean crops setting pods, above the 64% reported blooming last year and the 5 year average of 79%. Louisiana reported soybean crops with nearly all pods set at 99%.
The report showed 56% of soybean crops in "good" condition, 1 percentage point down from last week but above the 44% in "good" condition this time last year. Some 16% of soybean crops were in "excellent" condition, 1 percentage point down from last week but above the 9% in "excellent" condition this time last year.
