Following the Oct. 7, 2019, USDA Crop Progress report, crops still remains significantly behind schedule. Additionally, corn and soybean saw some small decreases in their reported “good” and “excellent” crop conditions.

Corn dented remains behind at 93% dented as of Oct. 6, above the 88% reported in the Sept. 29 Crop Progress report. This time last year, 100% of corn in the U.S. was dented, and the 5 year average is 99% dented.

Corn maturation improved from 43% last week to 58% on Oct. 6, below the 5 year average of 85% of corn mature and well below the 92% reported this time last year. The state lagging the most is North Dakota at 22% of corn mature compared to 92% mature this time last year.

Corn harvested increased to 15% this week, above the 11% reported last week, but below the 5 year average of 27% and the 33% reported this time last year.

Corn condition showed little improvement compared to last week. Corn reported as “good” dropped 1% from last week’s 46% to the 45% reported this week. Corn reported as “excellent”” condition remained unchanged from last week’s 11% and well below the 21% reported this time last year.

Soybeans progress reports were similar to corn progress. Soybeans dropping leaves were reported at 72% this week, up from the 55% reported last week but well behind the 5 year average of 87% and the 90% reported this time last year.

Soybeans harvested were reported as 14% this week, which was double the 7% reported last week. This number comes in well below the 34% 5 year average for this time of year and the 31% of soybeans harvested reported at this time last year.

Soybeans conditions declined slightly this week. Soybean crops reported as “good” declined from the 46% reported last week to the 45% reported this week, below the 49% of soybeans reported “good” this time last year. “Excellent” soybean crops also saw a decline, from the 9% reported last week to 8% this week, less than half of the 19% of soybeans reported as “excellent” this time last year.
