In this episode of the new Farm Equipment podcast, “Our Dealer Story” brought to you by HBS Systems, Editor/Publisher Mike Lessiter sits with Eric Mason, the third generation of the family to lead a 2-store store New Holland and Massey Ferguson dealership in Utah.
Their conversation took place just moments in Denver right before the Far West Equipment Dealers Assn. Board Meeting that he was leading.
“Dad looked at me and said, ‘Eric, I need you to start running the operations of the business because I’m getting tired of these guys ... I’m afraid I’m going to tell them to send their trucks, load up all their stuff and go.’” –Eric Mason, Vice President and General Manager, Mason Machinery.
In this very open conversation, Mason recaps the history of a dealership that for many years was run out of Grandpa’s garage (“Grandma had to run out to the field and bring him back when a customer arrived”) and speaks frankly about some near-disastrous situations that they were fortunate to avoid, and learn from.
“We park our pride at the door,” says Eric, sharing how they’ve sought on others’ expertise, and how they also determined a better profitability position existed by purposely scaling back revenues to their own “sweet spot.”
