In this episode, host Casey Seymour of Moving Iron LLC and 21st Century Equipment sits down with Don Aberle, used equipment manager with Case IH dealership group Titan Machinery discuss the state of the ag economy and the amount of debt some customers are carrying and how both those issues impact machinery sales.
As the dynamics of the family farm change, farms will continue to diversify and evolve — and that will change the equipment needs of dealerships’ farm customers.
They also talk about the challenge that come along with equipment continuing to get larger and how finding second buyers for something as large as a 48- or 54-row planter isn’t easy. They also get into how the surplus of combines from 2012-14 will cause inventory problems.
“One thing we’ll hopefully recognize is that model years of 12s, 13s, 14s … maybe a little bit of 11s too, it’s such a commodity and treated as such, buy it as such. And gosh darn it, if you don’t have a home for it, and if you’re not already at auction prices, then don’t do the deal. If the dynamics don’t work, the economics don’t work, then it doesn’t work,” says Aberle about how dealers should handle used combine trades.
