Compared to a week ago, as of Oct. 28, corn and harvests saw a significant double-digit pick up.
According to USDA’s most recent Crop Progress report, 63% of corn acres have been harvested. This up 14% since the previous Sunday. It’s also higher than the 52% in the bin on this date a year ago and it’s even with the 5 year average.
An even higher percentage of soybeans have been harvested as of this past Sunday. The latest report puts 72% of soybean acres harvested so far. While this is up from 53% a week earlier, it’s down significantly from the 81% harvested on this date last year and the 5 year average of 81%.
Acres harvested so far for the major corn producing states continues to be mixed. In Illinois, 89% of the corn crop has been harvested, but only 49% of Iowa’s crop is out of the field as of Sunday.
The pace for soybeans is much closer. In Illinois, 86% of soybean acres have been harvested so far, while Iowa farmers have 71% of their acres out of the field.
