A fire consumed a John Deere dealership and repair shop in Elgin, N.D., overnight Sunday, according to a story in the Bismarck Tribune, leaving the town's farm implement store a total loss.

However, Dakota Farm Equipment was back operating Tuesday in temporary office space in downtown Elgin, according to Mike Ballard, co-owner of the family-owned business.

"We’re up and running already," Ballard said.

The company's sales and service departments resumed work in the downtown office space, and some service technicians were working in a shop located across the road from the building that burned down, he said.

A call came in about a fire at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and fire crews remained on scene midday Monday, according to officials. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. 

Allen Hummel, fire chief of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department, said the state fire marshal will determine the cause of the blaze.

Dakota Farm Equipment, which bought the Elgin dealership in 2006, also has locations in Beach, Bowman, Dickinson and Lemmon. 

Ballard said the company has not yet decided whether to rebuild or relocate. He said he is thankful for the swift response from the fire departments in Elgin, Carson and New Leizpig.

“We truly appreciate the fire departments in Elgin and surrounding communities that came in and helped to definitely keep it under control so it didn’t spread throughout the town," he said.
