To The Point: World's Apart, But on the Same Page

On paper, the two 2013 Dealerships of the Year covered in this issue of Farm Equipment couldn't be farther apart. One Stotz Equipment has 23 locations in 8 states, 380 employees and revenues last year of $235 million. The other Lake County International has 1 location covering a small region in South Dakota, with 22 employees and annual revenues of just over $25 million. (For the record, until 1997, Stotz was a 3-store dealership.)

Dealer Used Combine Inventory Rated as High

The word on the street is John Deere will once again allocate combines in 2014 and may even reduce its allocations to help its dealers get their arms around the used combine situation that's been making a lot of dealers nervous for at least the past 3 or 4 years. No one should be surprised by Deere's decision and don't be surprised if they reduce the allocation to dealers who are struggling to get their inventories under control.

Crop 96% Emerged; 92% of Soybeans Planted

Corn planting in the top 18 corn-producing states is complete as farmers finished with a flurry during the past 2 weeks, according to USDA's Crop Progress report issued today. As for corn crop conditions, 8% of the crop was in poor or very poor condition, much improved over last year when 14% of corn was in poor recovery poor condition. Corn in good or excellent condition was 65%, compared to 56% last year.
