Dealer Optimism in Short Supply for 2020

Poor planting conditions in major ag regions combined with ongoing trade disputes are contributing to more uncertainty than usual for North American farm equipment dealers.
In the past year, the Ag Equipment Intelligence “Dealer Optimism Index,” which measures sentiment among dealers compared to the prior month, has yet to move into positive territory. The index is based on a monthly survey of North American farm equipment dealers that asks if they are more or less optimistic about their business prospects or feel about the same as they did in the previous survey.

Farmers More Optimistic About Future vs. Current Conditions

The Purdue/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer for September 2019 shows that farmer sentiments about current and future economic conditions differ decidedly. According to Purdue researchers, the Ag Economy Barometer dipped slightly in September to a reading of 121, down just 3 points from August, when the index stood at 124.

Despite the hard year that North American farmers — and thus farm equipment dealers — have been having, nearly everyone I visited with seemed upbeat and relatively positive.
